FAQs
Find quick answers to frequently asked questions about our services and clinic.
The common one is soreness. The jaw and the muscles around it can ache for a day or two afterwards, much like after unfamiliar exercise, and it tends to lessen as treatment goes on.
Serious problems are rare. Your physiotherapist adjusts how firm the treatment is based on how you responded last time, so tell them if you were sore for longer than a couple of days.
Physiotherapy treats the muscular and mechanical side: restricted movement, tender muscles, clicking, limited opening, and the posture and neck contribution.
Dentistry handles the structural side: bite problems, damaged teeth, and appliances such as a night guard.
Most jaw problems have some of both, which is why the two often run alongside each other. Your physiotherapist will tell you at the assessment if what you have needs a dentist rather than us, or as well as us.
No. You can book directly with us.
Some extended health plans ask for a physician referral before they will reimburse you, so it is worth reading your plan wording first. If your dentist has already assessed you, bring what they told you, because it is useful to work from.
Because most clenching and grinding happens while you are asleep, so the muscles are loaded for hours with no break. Sleeping position adds to it, particularly on your side with the jaw pressed into the pillow.
Stress plays a part too. Tension you hold consciously through the day tends to come out once that control relaxes.
Treatment works on the muscles themselves, on sleeping position, and on the daytime habits that feed the night time load.
Plan for about an hour. Your physiotherapist assesses how the jaw moves, where the muscles are tender, how your bite sits and what your posture is doing, then asks about the triggers: desk work, stress, sleep, dental work.
Treatment starts in the same visit. That usually means gentle hands on work to settle the pain, an explanation of what is actually driving it, and a short home programme. Later sessions build on that as the joint starts moving better.
No, they do different jobs. A guard protects your teeth from the force of grinding. Physiotherapy works on the joint and the muscles producing that force.
Most people who have been given a guard keep wearing it alongside treatment. Tell your physiotherapist you have one, since it changes what they look for.
Sometimes, and anyone who promises it is guessing. A jaw that clicks without pain is common and often does not need treating at all.
Where the clicking comes with pain, limited opening or locking, treatment is aimed at those. The noise itself sometimes settles as the joint starts moving evenly again, but it is not what we measure success by.
You get an estimate at the end of the first assessment rather than an open ended plan. A jaw that has been painful for years usually takes longer than a recent flare.
There is a review point built in, and your physiotherapist will tell you if it is not responding rather than booking you in indefinitely.
For calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder it is good. Trials show shockwave breaks down the calcium deposit and improves pain and function, with the benefit still there at six months. The strongest results come from higher energy protocols.
For tendon problems such as plantar fasciitis the honest answer is that it helps, but by less than the marketing around shockwave suggests, and the better run trials tend to show smaller effects than the weaker ones.
That is why it is used here alongside loading exercise rather than as a treatment on its own, and why your physiotherapist will tell you if it is not the right tool for what you came in with.
Work is fine. Most people go straight back to their day.
Training is worth easing off. Light movement is fine, but a hard session straight afterwards tends to undo what the treatment was for, and some people feel tired or a little light headed for an hour or two. If you have something booked that evening, say so during your session and your acupuncturist will factor it in.
Loose, comfortable clothing that can be moved above the elbow and above the knee. Many of the points used sit on the forearms, lower legs, back and abdomen, so your acupuncturist needs to reach those areas.
You will not need to undress fully. If a point needs access your clothing does not allow, you will be given a gown and draped, the same as any other treatment here.
Needles are single use, sterile, and disposed of after your session. Acupuncture is a regulated profession in British Columbia, and your acupuncturist is registered with the College of Complementary Health Professionals of British Columbia.
Side effects are usually minor: a small bruise at a point, a brief ache, or feeling tired and unusually relaxed for the rest of the day. Tell your acupuncturist if you are pregnant, taking blood thinners, or have a pacemaker, because each of those changes which points and techniques are appropriate.
Plan for about an hour. Your registered acupuncturist takes a full health history, asks about sleep, digestion, stress and the pattern of your pain, and examines you before deciding where to needle. This is why the first visit is longer than the ones that follow.
Treatment happens in the same session. Most people rest with the needles in place for twenty to thirty minutes. Afterwards you may feel relaxed or a little tired, so it is worth drinking water and taking the rest of the day gently if you can.
Yes. ICBC pre-approves twelve acupuncture sessions in the first twelve weeks after a reported crash, separate from any physiotherapy you are having. Bring your claim number and your personal health number to your first visit and we bill ICBC directly for those sessions.
The twelve weeks are the window rather than a deadline to begin, so the sooner you start, the more of the allowance you can actually use. If your recovery needs more than twelve sessions, we apply to ICBC on your behalf rather than leaving it to you.
Most extended health plans include acupuncture, and we direct bill to the majority of major insurers. Bring your plan details to your first visit and we will check what yours covers before you commit to a course.
No. You can book acupuncture directly with us. Some extended health plans ask for a physician referral before they will reimburse you, so it is worth reading your plan wording before your first visit.
A typical course runs six to twelve sessions over about three months, usually starting weekly and spacing out as things improve. Some people notice a change after the first visit, others take several.
You will get an estimate at the end of your assessment rather than an open ended plan, and we will tell you if acupuncture is not the right tool for what you came in with.
Most people are surprised by how little they feel. Acupuncture needles are about the width of a human hair, nothing like the hollow needles used for injections or blood draws.
What you are more likely to notice is a dull heaviness, warmth or tingling around the point. Practitioners call this deqi, it is the response we are aiming for, and it usually settles within seconds. Tell your acupuncturist if anything feels sharp, because a needle can be adjusted straight away.
You can resume normal activities immediately after treatment. Mild soreness for 24-48 hours is normal as your body adjusts. Drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day, and apply ice if needed. Avoid heavy lifting for 24 hours after your adjustment.
The "popping" sound during adjustments is just gas bubbles releasing from the joint - it's not your bones cracking and isn't painful. If you're uncomfortable with manual adjustments, our Burnaby chiropractor offers gentle, low-force techniques like activator methods that don't produce cracking sounds. You're always in control.
No referral is needed to book a chiropractor at BLVD Wellness. Chiropractors in BC are primary care providers, so you can book directly. Some extended health insurance plans may require a referral for coverage, but ICBC claims do not require one.
es, you can combine chiropractic care with our massage therapy or physiotherapy. Many Burnaby patients pair chiropractic adjustments with massage to relax muscles beforehand, making treatment more effective. Our team coordinates your care across services to create a comprehensive treatment plan.
Chiropractors focus on spinal alignment and nervous system function through manual adjustments, while physiotherapists use exercises and movement rehabilitation. At BLVD Wellness, many Burnaby patients combine both services - chiropractic adjustments restore alignment while physiotherapy exercises strengthen supporting muscles to prevent re-injury.
Your primary plan (usually your own employer plan) pays first. We'll direct bill them for you. We'll also attempt to direct bill your secondary plan, however not all insurers allow direct billing for secondary coverage. If we can't direct bill your secondary plan, you'll receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your primary insurer showing any remaining balance. Simply submit this EOB and our original invoice to your secondary plan through their portal.
Yes. If you have coverage through your own employer and your spouse's plan, you can use both to maximize your reimbursement. This is called "coordination of benefits" and can help you recover up to 100% of your treatment costs.

Currently, we focus on individual personal training to provide the most personalized attention and results.
Most clients see excellent results training 2-3 times per week with a personal trainer, plus 1-2 independent workouts. Fitness beginners often start with 2 sessions weekly, while clients with specific goals may train more frequently. Your trainer will recommend the optimal frequency based on your goals, schedule, and recovery capacity.
Every personal training client receives basic nutritional guidance including calorie and macro targets, meal timing recommendations, and supplement suggestions. Clients can upgrade to comprehensive meal planning and weekly nutrition check-ins for deeper support with their fitness goals.
While we're not physiotherapists, our certified personal trainers specialize in corrective exercise and work closely with both healthcare providers and our recovery therapists. We can help you safely return to activity post-injury, address movement dysfunctions, and prevent future injuries through proper exercise progression and coordinated recovery protocols.
All BLVD trainers hold certifications from nationally recognized organizations. Our team also holds specialized certifications including Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), Weight Loss Specialist (WLS), Functional Movement Screening (FMS), Strength & Conditioning Techniques, Nutrition Coaching (Precision Nutrition Level 3), and Mental Performance & Habit Change Work.

Most patients rate discomfort at 5/10 or less during treatment. Your physiotherapy specialist adjusts the pressure intensity based on your comfort level, ensuring effective shockwave treatments within your tolerance. The therapeutic pressure feels similar to deep tissue massage.
Yes! Shockwave therapy works exceptionally well with manual therapy, corrective exercises, ultrasound, and other physiotherapy modalities for accelerated tissue healing. Our sports medicine approach integrates multiple treatment types for optimal results.
Side effects are minimal and temporary, including mild bruising, slight swelling, or tenderness lasting 24-48 hours. Unlike invasive medical procedures, shockwave therapy patients can return to daily activities immediately - no downtime or extensive rehabilitation required
Most conditions require three to six shockwave treatments spaced one week apart. Our physiotherapy team assesses patient progress after each session, with 70% of patients reporting significant pain reduction after just three treatments. The exact number depends on your condition type and severity.
Shockwave therapy sessions at our clinic typically range from $100-150 per treatment. Many extended health insurance plans cover physiotherapy services, and we offer direct billing for your medical insurance convenience. Contact your provider to confirm coverage for "physiotherapy treatments" or "ESWT services."
