How IT WORKS

What physiotherapy is

Physiotherapy treats how you move. A physiotherapist assesses how your joints, muscles and nerves work together, finds what is driving the pain or restriction, and builds a plan to correct it.

Treatment usually pairs hands-on work with exercise you carry on between visits. The manual work settles symptoms and restores range. The exercise is what makes the change hold.

It covers far more than sports injury: persistent headache and jaw pain, post surgical recovery, arthritis, nerve pain, dizziness, and the everyday strains of sitting, lifting or training. No referral is needed to book.

Physiotherapy
WHAT TO EXPECT

Your first physiotherapy visit, step by step

What happens from assessment through to discharge, including how progress gets measured and roughly how long it should take.

Assessment

Your physiotherapist takes a full history, then tests movement, strength and load tolerance to find what is actually driving the problem rather than only where you feel it.

Diagnosis and plan

You get a working diagnosis in plain language, the likely timeline, and what recovery depends on. You leave the first visit knowing what the plan is.

Hands on treatment

Treatment starts in the same session. Depending on the presentation that may include manual therapy, dry needling, taping or shockwave, alongside education about load.

Exercise and progression

You are given a small number of exercises that matter, not a long list. These are progressed as your capacity changes, and reviewed at every visit.

Review and discharge

Progress is measured against the markers set at assessment. When you hit them, you are discharged with a plan to keep the gains rather than kept on indefinitely.

Josh is very kind and knowledgeable. I had a very good experience with him for my first physiotherapy appointment.

Jeremy was such a breath of fresh air! I am always a little wary when going to a new professional, but BLVD has a wonderful relaxing vibe and I felt great after my first TMJ treatment. Any session where I can leave feeling better and a little more educated is one that keeps me coming back. Looking forward to my next session!

I had a great experience with Sing Ng at Blvd Wellness for TMJ physiotherapy. Sing was very knowledgeable, professional, and took the time to explain what was causing my discomfort and how the treatment would help. I couldn't open my mouth more than two fingers wide because of my TMJ issue. After the first session, I noticed improvement in my jaw tension and overall comfort. I would highly recommend Sing Ng and Blvd Wellness to anyone dealing with TMJ pain or jaw discomfort.

Common questions

Questions we hear most.

How does having two extended health benefit work?

Your primary plan (usually your own employer plan) pays first. We'll direct bill them for you. We'll also attempt to direct bill your secondary plan, however not all insurers allow direct billing for secondary coverage. If we can't direct bill your secondary plan, you'll receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your primary insurer showing any remaining balance. Simply submit this EOB and our original invoice to your secondary plan through their portal.

I have two extended health benefit plans. Can I use both?

Yes. If you have coverage through your own employer and your spouse's plan, you can use both to maximize your reimbursement. This is called "coordination of benefits" and can help you recover up to 100% of your treatment costs.

What should I expect at my first visit?

Plan for about 45 minutes. We’ll take a detailed health and injury history, then assess your strength, flexibility, joint movement and functional tasks (e.g., walking, lifting). Next, we explain your diagnosis in plain language, begin hands-on or exercise treatment, and email you a personalised home-exercise plan with videos and timelines.

Do you offer virtual (tele-rehab) appointments?

Yes. If work, distance, childcare or mobility issues make it hard to reach the clinic, you can book a secure video session. Tele-rehab lets your therapist guide exercises, progress your program and answer questions in real time. All you need is a smartphone or computer with a camera and a bit of space to move.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to book a physiotherapy appointment?

No. Physiotherapists are primary-care practitioners, so you can book directly without a doctors referral. Some extended-health plans still ask for a note, and ICBC may need one for paperwork.

What is physiotherapy and how can it help me?

It’s evidence-based care that combines exercise, manual therapy and education to restore movement, reduce pain and improve quality of life at any age or stage of health.
