Understanding the role of a chiropractor
A chiropractor is a licensed health professional trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system. At BLVD Wellness, our Burnaby chiropractors bring years of experience helping patients manage pain, recover from injuries, and maintain long-term wellness.
Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between your spine and overall health. When the spine is misaligned, it can put pressure on surrounding nerves, leading to discomfort, restricted movement, and a range of other symptoms. Our chiropractors use hands-on techniques to correct these issues and restore proper function to the body.
Whether you're experiencing chronic back pain, recovering from a motor vehicle injury, or simply looking to improve your posture and mobility, our Burnaby clinic offers personalized chiropractic treatments designed around your specific needs. We take the time to understand each patient's condition before recommending a care plan, so you always know what to expect.

When the pain has a pattern
Most people book chiropractic because something has stopped settling on its own. A back that seizes in the same way each time. A leg that aches after sitting. Pain that eases with movement and returns by evening. If that sounds familiar, the pattern matters more than the flare, and it is the first thing your chiropractor will want to hear about.
Your first chiropractic visit, step by step
What happens from the initial assessment through to your first adjustment, and how the plan is built from there.
Health history and assessment
Your chiropractor takes a full history and asks what makes the problem better or worse, then screens for anything that needs referral rather than treatment.
Physical examination
Movement, joint function, muscle tone and neurological signs are examined so the adjustment is chosen for your presentation rather than applied by routine.
First adjustment
Treatment usually begins in the same visit. Your chiropractor explains what each adjustment is for and what you should expect to feel afterwards.
Plan and review
You get a clear schedule with a review point, so the course has an endpoint. Care is adjusted or referred on if the response is not what was expected.
How an adjustment is chosen
Chiropractic here is not one technique applied to everyone. What your chiropractor uses depends on the joint involved, how irritable it is, and what you are comfortable with. Some people get a traditional adjustment. Others get slower mobilisation and soft tissue work first. Each method below is used for a specific reason.
Active rehabilitation
Exercise to hold the change, so the joint is not relying on being adjusted every week.
Dynamic cupping
Suction applied while you move, used to free tissue that is limiting how a joint travels.
Joint mobilisation
Slower, low force movement of a joint through its range, used where a thrust would be too much.
Soft tissue release
Hands on work on the muscle and fascia around a restricted joint, often before it is adjusted.
Spinal adjustment
A quick, controlled thrust to a specific joint. The traditional adjustment, and what most visits involve.
Taping
Elastic tape applied to support a joint or cue posture between visits, without limiting movement.

Questions we hear most.
What should I do after a chiropractic adjustment?
You can resume normal activities immediately after treatment. Mild soreness for 24-48 hours is normal as your body adjusts. Drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day, and apply ice if needed. Avoid heavy lifting for 24 hours after your adjustment.
What if I'm nervous about the "cracking" sound or chiropractic adjustments?
The "popping" sound during adjustments is just gas bubbles releasing from the joint - it's not your bones cracking and isn't painful. If you're uncomfortable with manual adjustments, our Burnaby chiropractor offers gentle, low-force techniques like activator methods that don't produce cracking sounds. You're always in control.
Do I need a referral from my doctor to see a chiropractor?
No referral is needed to book a chiropractor at BLVD Wellness. Chiropractors in BC are primary care providers, so you can book directly. Some extended health insurance plans may require a referral for coverage, but ICBC claims do not require one.
Can I combine chiropractic care with massage therapy or other services?
es, you can combine chiropractic care with our massage therapy or physiotherapy. Many Burnaby patients pair chiropractic adjustments with massage to relax muscles beforehand, making treatment more effective. Our team coordinates your care across services to create a comprehensive treatment plan.
What's the difference between a chiropractor and a physiotherapist?
Chiropractors focus on spinal alignment and nervous system function through manual adjustments, while physiotherapists use exercises and movement rehabilitation. At BLVD Wellness, many Burnaby patients combine both services - chiropractic adjustments restore alignment while physiotherapy exercises strengthen supporting muscles to prevent re-injury.
